audible
A play called at the line of scrimmage to supersede the play originally agreed upon as the result of a change in strategy.
blitz
An act or instance of charging directly for (the passer) as soon as the ball is snapped; red-dogging.
coffin corner
A corner of the field inside the ten-yard line, especially as the target of a punt intended to go out of bounds in this area.
drop kick
A kick made by dropping a football to the ground and kicking it as it starts to bounce up.
encroachment
A foul where a player crosses the line of scrimmage and makes contact with a member of the offense before the ball is snapped, resulting in a 5-yard penalty.

gridiron
Another word for football field.
flea flicker
A deceptive offensive play in which the ball is passed or transferred laterally before or after a forward pass.
fumble
A failure to hold or maintain hold on to the ball after having touched it or carried it.
Hail Mary
A long forward pass, especially as a last-ditch attempt at the end of a game, where completion is considered unlikely.
muff
A failure to hold onto a ball that may reasonably be expected to be caught successfully.
nose tackle
A defensive position wherein a defensive lineman lines up directly across from the center.
onside kick
A kickoff deliberately kicked a short distance in an attempt by the kicking team to regain possession of the ball.
pump fake
A deceptive move in which the quarterback fakes a pass but keeps the ball in their hand to throw in another direction after.
punt
A kick in which the ball is dropped and then kicked before it touches the ground.
running out the clock
A strategy where the team in the lead executes simple running plays in an attempt to use up the time left in the game and thus win.
sack
To tackle (the quarterback) behind the line of scrimmage before the quarterback is able to throw a pass.
slobber-knocker
An unusually violent hit or collision.
squib kick
A kickoff that is purposely low so it will wobble and bounce along the ground, making it hard to field and return.
wishbone
An offensive formation in which the fullback is positioned directly behind the quarterback and the two halfbacks are positioned farther behind and to the left and right, respectively.
zebra
An official, so called for their distinctive uniform.
