active voice
verb subject is performing the action; "The boy threw the ball"
run-on sentence
written sequence of two or more main clauses not separated grammatically
sentence fragment
clause lacking a necessary element to function as an independent sentence
parallelism
repetition of a syntactic construction in successive sentences for effect

gerund

idiom

dangling modifier
phrase that modifies an unintended element of the sentence
adverb

adjective
word with comparative or superlative endings, or that modifies nouns
preposition
used before nouns or pronouns to form phrases; to, with, by, at, as, in
conjunction
connects words, phrases, clauses, or sentences; and, but, because, etc.
article
noun-linked word; identifies rather than describes; as in a, an, the
redundancy
inclusion or repetition of more information than is necessary
superlative
highest degree of comparison of adjectives and adverbs; best, worst
comparative
intermediate comparison of adjectives; better than, worse than, etc.
semi-colon
punctuation mark (;) used to indicate a major division in a sentence
colon
the sign (:) indicates that what follows relates to what precedes
infinitive
verb form that names the action without specifying the subject; "to go"
diction
style of speaking or writing as dependent upon choice of words
double negative
two negative words used in the same clause to express a positive
