Protestant Reformation
A religious movement of the 16th century that began as an attempt to reform the Roman Catholic Church and resulted in the creation of Protestant churches.
Northern Europe
The northern countries in Europe; the countries which turned Protestant after the reformation, with the exception of Ireland and pockets of England.
Lutheran
Of or pertaining to Luther adhering to his doctrines, or belonging to one of the Protestant churches (mostly started in Germany and Scandinavia) that bear his name.

A defensive alliance of Lutheran princes within the Holy Roman Empire during the mid-16th century.

Argued for the interdependence of the church and secular authorities.
Radical Reformation
A response to Roman Catholic corruption and abuse.
Counter Reformation
The movement within the Roman Catholic Church that followed the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century.
Thomas Müntzer
An early Reformation-era German theologian, who became a rebel leader during the Peasants' War.
Huldrych Zwingli
A leader of the Reformation in Switzerland.
John Knox
A Scottish clergyman and a leader of the Protestant Reformation who brought reformation to the church in Scotland.
Puritan
A member of a group of Protestants that arose in the 16th century within the Church of England, demanding the simplification of doctrine and worship, and greater strictness in religious discipline.
Presbyterian
Designating or pertaining to various churches having this form of government and professing more or less modified forms of Calvinism.
Anglican
Related in origin to and in communion with the Church of England, as various Episcopal churches in other parts of the world.
Thirty Years' War
The war, often regarded as a series of wars (1618–1648) which began as a religious conflict between Protestants and Catholics.
