the repetition of initial consonant sounds.
consonance
the repetition of consonants as a rhyming device.
assonance
the repetition of combined vowel and consonant sounds within words.
rhyme
a word agreeing with another in the final sound, as in find, mind, womankind.
meter
the rhythmic element of a poem as measured by division into parts of equal time value.

internal rhyme

a rhyme created by two or more words in the same line of verse.
metonymy
a figure of speech that uses the name of one object or concept to represent something it is related to, as in "count heads" for "count people."
stanza

rhyme scheme
a repeated pattern of rhymes used in a poem.
free verse
a poem that does not follow a fixed rhythm.
repetition
a word or line that is repeated in a poem.
refrain
a stanza that recurs multiple times in a poem.
onomatopoeia
a word whose sound mimics the thing its referring to, as in a "slithering snake."
metaphor
a figure of speech in which one thing is compared to another in order to suggest a resemblance.
simile
a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared that uses the words "like" or "as."
