submarine
A vessel that can be submerged and navigated under water, usually built for warfare and armed with torpedoes or guided missiles.
woodrow wilson
28th president of the U.S., elected 1913. Asked Congress to authorize American entry into WWI, mainly because of unrestricted submarine warfare.
Lusitania
A British luxury liner sunk by a German submarine in the North Atlantic on May 7, 1915. One of the events leading to U.S. entry into World War I.
League of Nations
An international organization to promote world peace and cooperation that was created by the Treaty of Versailles (1919). Dissolved April 1946.

Zimmermann Telegram
A 1917 diplomatic proposal from the German Empire to Mexico to make war against the United States that was subsequently intercepted by British intelligence.
Selective Service Act
Authorized the federal government to raise a national army for the American entry into World War I.
U-boat
A German submarine.
John J. Pershing
U.S. general; commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I.
homefront
The civilian sector of a nation at war when its armed forces are in combat abroad.
boom
To progress, grow, or flourish vigorously, as a business or a city; American industry experienced this as a result of the U.S. joining the war.
mustard gas
An oily liquid, CHClS, used in chemical warfare. Blisters the skin and damages the lungs, often causing blindness and death. Introduced by the Germans in World War I.
trench warfare
Combat in which each side occupies a system of protective excavations in the ground.
casualty
A member of the armed forces lost to service through death, wounds, sickness, capture, or because his or her whereabouts or condition cannot be determined.
victory garden
A vegetable garden, especially a home garden, cultivated to increase food production during a war or period of shortages.
