a word that is the base of another word, as dance the root in danced.
suffix
an affix that follows the element to which it is added, as -ly in kindly.
affix
a sound or group of letters that is added to a root word to change its meaning.
prefix
an affix placed before a root or another prefix, as un- in unkind.
simile
a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared that uses the words "like" or "as."

metaphor
a figure of speech in which a term is applied to something else in order to suggest a resemblance.
analogy
a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based.
compound word
when two or more words are combined to create a new word.
contraction
a shortened form of a word or group of words, with the omitted letters often replaced by an apostrophe, as I'm for I am.
syllable
an uninterrupted segment of speech, as in "man" or "eye."
stress
n
accent or emphasis on syllables in a metrical pattern; beat.
synonym
a word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word.
antonym
a word opposite in meaning to another.
idiom
an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of the phrase.
homophone
a word pronounced the same as another but differing in meaning, whether spelled the same way or not; also a homonym.
