a headline consisting of a top line at the left margin, with each succeeding line indented on the left, and the final line flush with the right margin
deskman/ deskperson
a member of a newspaper staff who processes news and prepares copy, usually from information telephoned in by reporters
syndicate
an agency that buys articles and features and distributes them for simultaneous publication in a number of newspapers in different localities
cover
to act as a reporter or reviewer of an event; to publish or broadcast a report
boilerplate
syndicated or ready-to-print copy, used especially by weekly newspapers; trite, hackneyed writing
byline
a printed line accompanying a news story, article, or the like, giving the author's name
clipsheet
a sheet of paper printed on one side containing news items and features, distributed by public relations firms, and similar organizations
copy desk
the desk in a newspaper office at which copy is edited and prepared for printing
dayside
the day shift of a newspaper
filler
material, considered of secondary importance, used to fill out a column or page
legman
a reporter who gathers information by visiting news sources or by being present at news events
shirttail
a brief item added at the end of a related newspaper story
squib
a short news story, often used as a filler
nightside
the night shift of a newspaper
time copy
written material set in type and held for future use
